The myth and why it is so tempting

It's an idea we hear every week: ‘I'm going to open ChatGPT and explain how great my brand is; that way it will learn and start recommending me.’ It makes sense: if AI ‘reads’ what you say, why wouldn't it use it?

But the reality is different. It doesn’t update the model’s global weights or public index. At best, it may affect your session (user memories or chat), but it does not create public evidence that other users or engines can consult. And since responses that include brands are built from external sources and trusted patterns, the conversation leaves no trace where it matters. In other words, it would be a waste of time.

Key idea: in brand visibility for AI, the task is not to ‘convince the model in a chat,’ but rather to create verifiable evidence outside that engines can find, summarise, and use in their responses.

How do engines decide which brands appear

Large language models (LLMs) do not choose brands at random. They gather information and combine it with a single goal in mind: to give a good answer. To create these responses, they gather information on:

  • Reference sources (diverse and credible): industry media, specialist forums, videos by authoritative creators, wikis/directories, technical documentation.

  • Consistent pattern: your brand appears alongside a specific category/benefit in several independent sources.

  • Freshness: recent content carries more weight in trend-sensitive prompts.

  • Clarity: AI needs your name, category, attributes, approximate prices, integrations, and use cases to be described consistently in different places.

The engine trusts when it finds the same thing through different channels. If your public footprint is poor, contradictory, or out of date, no conversational reasoning can compensate for that.

Which factors increase your visibility (and how to activate them)

The correct question is not ‘How do I tell AI that I exist?’, but rather ‘What must I build so that AI cannot ignore me?’

Sources that AI already consults

If your brand appears under different names, promises different things depending on the channel, or changes categories without warning, you create confusion.

To avoid this:

  • Always use the same name, category, and messages.

  • Keep key data (prices, conditions, integrations) consistent across your website, media, and public listings.

  • Clearly indicate updates with dates or change logs.

Consistency is not an aesthetic detail: it is what allows an AI model to identify you and quote you without hesitation.

Content that can be cited

Writing a lot does not give you more visibility if no one can use what you publish as a reference. What really works usually includes:

  • Clear methodology: explain criteria, data used, and limitations.

  • Reusable tables and figures: so others can copy and cite them.

  • Quick answers: to frequently asked questions.

  • Concrete evidence: current screenshots and examples, not generic ones.

Example: instead of saying ‘we are the simplest platform’, show a table with the average implementation time, number of integrations and minimum requirements. That's easy to summarise... and to quote.

Freshness where it matters

A solid tutorial from 2022 is worth less if there are new policies, prices, or products.

  • Display the update date: always add ‘Updated on (date)’ and, when relevant, indicate what has changed (e.g. ‘new prices’, ‘new integrations’, ‘2025 data’).

  • Regular review: establish a fixed schedule.

    • Comparisons → reflecting the latest market offerings.

    • Technical specifications → with actual, current specifications.

    • Pricing page → always aligned with current conditions.

The real role of decision prompts and how to prioritise them

The answers that really influence a decision are not triggered by generic words, but by specific questions about the situation: how it will be used, what limitations there are, budget, language or channel. Realistic examples:

  • “Alternatives to (brand X) for teams of 5–10 people with SSO and integration in Notion.”

  • “Platforms for launching a B2B referral programme with an annual contract and 30-day onboarding.”

  • “Best brands in (category X) with official certifications and support in Spanish.”

How to prioritise them without getting lost:

  1. Analyse which prompts have the highest volume, which real questions users are asking.

  2. Estimate the potential of each prompt: ‘Will this prompt make a consumer decide to buy my product?’

  3. Assess the competitive difficulty (who appears today, how many brands dominate, how strong is their visibility).

  3. Note down the brands that appear and the role they play (recommended vs. mentioned).
