TL;DR
- AI citation optimization is the practice of making your pages the sources AI engines cite when they answer a question.
- AI citation optimization differs from SEO because the goal is to be quoted inside an AI answer, not to rank in a list.
- A citation is not a mention: a mention names your brand, while a citation points to one of your pages.
- The first AI citation measurement is to track which URLs AI engines cite for your buyers' prompts, and who owns each one.
- The tactics for earning citations live in the guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT.
Your founder asks why a competitor shows up when someone asks ChatGPT about your category, and you don't. The answer names them and points to a few pages. None is yours.
Those pointers are citations, and you can measure and change them. Here, "citation" means an AI engine citing your page, not you citing AI-generated text.
What is AI citation optimization?
AI citation optimization is the practice of making your pages the sources AI engines cite when they answer a question. A citation is a reference to a source, a URL or a document, included in an AI answer. It is also searched as "what are citations in AI search".
The engines in scope are ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. The practice sits inside answer engine optimization (AEO), also called generative engine optimization (GEO): the wider work of being found, mentioned and cited by AI engines.
How is AI citation optimization different from SEO?
SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results, while AI citation optimization aims to make a page the source an answer quotes. The table shows where they split.
| Compared on | SEO | AI citation optimization |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list of results | Be cited in an AI answer |
| What you measure | Position and clicks | Whether your URL is cited, and by which engine |
| What you work from | Keywords | Prompts |
The two overlap, because Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of Google search. AI citation optimization adds to SEO. It does not replace it.
What is the difference between a mention, a citation and share of voice?
A mention is an AI answer naming your brand, while a citation is an AI answer pointing to one of your pages as a source. A brand can be named without being cited, and cited without being named.
| Term | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Visibility | Percentage of AI answers that mention your brand |
| Share of Voice | Percentage of all brand mentions in AI answers that belong to each brand |
| Citation | A source URL in an AI answer: owned, third-party or social |
| Citation share of voice | Percentage of all citations in AI answers that belong to each cited source |
Citations show which pages the engines relied on, so they show what to change.
How do AI engines choose which sources to cite?
AI engines pull pages that answer the question directly and stand on their own, and for most topics the cited pages belong to other people. Meltwater, in a case study published on 4 August 2026, lists direct answers and self-contained sections among six patterns in its most-cited pages.
Omnia's monitoring shows the second half: for the US prompt "ai citation optimization", Omnia recorded 442 distinct cited URLs between 5 October and 4 November 2026. Of the 25 most cited, 21 were third-party, 3 were social and 1 was Omnia's own. That is one prompt, so treat it as a snapshot. No tactic guarantees a citation.
How do you measure AI citations?
To measure AI citations, track which URLs AI engines cite for the prompts your buyers type, and who owns each URL. You can start by hand:
- Choose a starter set of prompts, written the way a buyer talks to an AI engine, not as keywords.
- Run each prompt in each engine and save the full answer.
- Record every cited URL and mark it owned, third-party or social.
- Compare your citation share of voice with your competitors', and watch the trend over weeks.
By hand this is slow, and answers vary between runs. Omnia monitors your prompts daily across the four engines above, stores every full answer, and shows cited URLs by type. Read our guide to tracking AI citations and our citation analysis tools comparison.

FAQs
Do AI citations impact my Google SEO rankings?
No study we found shows that being cited by AI engines changes your Google rankings. Ahrefs reported in March 2026 that 38% of URLs cited in Google AI Overviews also rank in the top 10, across 4 million AI Overview URLs. A ranking does not guarantee a citation.
How long does it take to see AI citations change?
There is no fixed time. Meltwater reported growth within about five weeks of its relaunch going live, and said timing varies with how often each engine re-crawls content.
